In 1999, tijdens een interview met CNN, zei Gore dat hij als lid van het Congres "het initiatief nam om het internet te creëren." Al snel werd dit door critici vervormd tot: "Al Gore beweert dat hij het internet heeft uitgevonden!", wat strijdig is met het feit dat het ARPANET, de voorloper van het Internet, ontstond in 1971, dus vijf jaar voordat Gore politicus werd. Direct bij het ontstaan van het internet betrokkenen zoals Vinton Cerf en Robert Kahn benadrukten later dat Gore, in tegenstelling tot vele andere politici, begreep dat het internet ook voor andere dan de oorspronkelijke, militaire doeleinden gebruikt kon worden. Een initiatief dat hij bijvoorbeeld samen met Bill Clinton nam was een wereldwijd bulletinboard genaamd SchoolLink, met als doel scholen wereldwijd met elkaar te verbinden. In die zin heeft Gore wel degelijk een zeer belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan initiatieven die van het internet gemaakt hebben wat het nu is; het hierboven vermelde citaat is wel onhandig geformuleerd.
