This course focuses on teXts by and about classic feminist authors such as Christine de Pisan, Mary Wollstonecraft, Virginia Woolf and Simone de Beauvoir. Though diverse in content and style, all teXts start from the same basic assumption that the subordinate or inferior position of women in society is unjustified. Feminist authors have different eXplanations and opinions concerning the reasons and possible remedies for this state of affairs. Nonetheless, there is also continuity in the type of topics and issues that emerge in the history of feminist ideas. The teXts will be used to elucidate and analyze the development of ideas concerning the role and position of women in Western society and culture. Attention will be paid to topics that keep returning in the teXts: education, marriage and morals, among others. In order to understand whence they come, the ideas will be situated in and discussed from the viewpoint of their historical, political and philosophical conteXts.

Human Rights Day 2015: Ybo Buruma
Freedom of expression comes with a price by diminishing ‘conservative’ values basic for life in a coherent society as authority, dignity, reputation and belief. How should we decide about the boundary between cases in which respect for these values is to be enforced and cases where this can no longer be considered to be acceptable in the perspective of freedom of expression? Notwithstanding its necessity for the democratic process and its value for the development of the arts and sciences, freedom of expression comes with a price. It's the price of breaking reputations of professionals and companies, diminishing the dignity of less powerful groups and vulnerable persons as well as the authority of officials, and to pollute what is sacred in the eyes of believers. This price is hard to acknowledge in a modern society where public opinion is less focused on the values of reputation, loyalty, authority and sanctity than in those of democracy and enlightenment. However these ' conservative' values are basic for life in a coherent society. How should we decide about the boundary between cases in which respect for these values is to be enforced (for instance by criminal law) and cases where this enforcement can no longer be considered to be acceptable in the perspective of freedom of expression? A lecture by Ybo Buruma, judge at the Dutch Supreme Court.
World Human Rights Day
Each year at Tilburg University an event is dedicated to World Human Rights Day. This is to celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted and proclaimed on December 10th 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly.
Human Rights Award
In the second half of the program, the Max van der Stoel Human Rights Award 2015 will be presented for the best PhD thesis and the best Master’s thesis on human rights. Max van der Stoel, served as OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities and as an UN Human Rights Rapporteur.

A quoi sert le Strafhof eXactement dans les histoires (judiciaires) de médias et de réseauX qui se sont beaucoup (trop) permis dans les chambres et les salons?
P.s: Le grand-père a étudié le droit à l'université catholique de Nijmegen. Ce doit être pour ça. Sur les médias et la morale. Une histoire simple. Une histoire d'éthique vue par les philosophes francophones en Hollande. Une tradition peut-être. Que veut dire philosopher? Philosopher serait d'abord poser les bonnes questions. Une histoire simplette.
