Keynote speech by Shazhad Akbar, head of the Islamabad-based Foundation for Fundamental Rights that advocates and campaigns for justice on behalf of the family members of drone strike victims.
Over the past decade the use of drones in war has moved to the center of legal, political and academic debates. Most discussions, however, revolve around questions of public international law, bureaucratic politics and diplomatic relations. Much less attention has been paid to the perspective of the victims of drone warfare; their experiences, their forms of resistance and their mobilization through the law. This seminar addresses this gap by examining the social and political consequences of drone warfare in Pakistan and exploring how lawyers have sought to address the effects of drone wars in the courts?
Our keynote speaker is Shazhad Akbar. Since 2010 Shazhad has been legally representing family members of civilian drone victim from Pakistan's North Waziristan Agency in litigation before the Pakistan Courts. He is the head of the Islamabad-based Foundation for Fundamental Rights that advocates and campaigns for justice on behalf of the family members of drone strike victims.
The event will be moderated by Wouter Werner (VU) and Gavin Sullivan (UvA).
Wouter Werner is Professor of Law at Vrije Universiteit, director of the ‘Boundaries of Law’ research program, co-founder of the Centre for the Politics of Transnational Law and chair of COST Action 1003 on the fragmentation and constitutionalization of international law. His main fields of interest are international legal theory, the interplay between international law and international politics and the international legal regime on the use of force.
Gavin Sullivan is a doctoral researcher in politics at the University of Amsterdam, solicitor and a co-operating lawyer with the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights. His research focuses on the politics of transnational security law and he currently represents individuals on the UN1267 Al-Qaida sanctions list.
