TUNIS (TAP) - "Tunisia's citizens are entitled to be well informed about government expenditure. Tunisia's accounting office aims to contribute to good governance, transparency and accountability in the new democratic Republic of Tunisia," said Mr. Abdelkader Zgoulli, First President of the Accounting Office at a meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the new plan of co-operation with the Netherlands Audit Office financed by the Dutch Foreign Ministry. The Tunisian accounting office aims to contribute, by mid 2012, to transparency especially through the audit of the election campaign financing. It will also submit next year its second report after the Revolution, added Mr. Zgoulli. The meeting was attended by Mrs. Caroline Weijers, Ambassador of the Netherlands in Tunis, Mrs. Andrea Connell, Head of the Co-operation Project, who highlighted the main objectives of the Netherlands Audit Office, namely good governance, transparency, integrity and political responsibility. An accounting office with an independent role and transparent reports, Mrs. Weijers said, is essential to democracy. As an independent institution, the accounting office provides independent reports on both government spending management and the efficiency of government policies for the parliament, the government and the citizens.
