Creative Industry

The work on virtual and augmented environments, persuasive agents, digital gaming as well as its expertise in designing and measuring human experience are highly relevant for developments pursued by the Creative Industry in the context of new media creation and smart living environment like virtual and intelligent cities.

Gaming concepts are currently widely used to train people in different professional skills. In that form serious gaming is a form of persuasive technology; it can be use train people. Serious gaming can make use of decision support systems, and negotiation systems to support the game and persuasive technology to direct the players through their game to enhance the gaming experience and gaming effects. The gaming technology can be used in many domains, one of which is that of health-care and wellbeing.

Lifestyle, Health care and Ambient Assisted Living

Mobile personal platforms (such as smart phones, palm computers, and laptops), and game consoles are pervasive in everyone’s life since many years. These devices increased people’s awareness of and interest in the capabilities and advantages of intelligence in all types of electronic devices in and around the house, shops or other public environments. At the same time, the luxury of life leads to a number of unhealthy changes in lifestyle, e.g., not enough exercise, too much fat intake, not enough sleep. To help people find a healthy lifestyle that fits with their personality and circumstances, the researchers active in this field are working on persuasive technology like coaching and tutoring. Persuasive technology is directed at influencing human behaviour. This can take the form of serious gaming.

The lifestyle and health care support systems of the future will have to meet a number of criteria to be both acceptable to society and effective with respect to their goals:

(1) the systems have to respect the norms and values of the society as a whole, and those of the involved stakeholders, such as patients, specialists, general practitioners, home care institutions

(2) they have to improve quality of life of the patients

(3) take into consideration societal and environmental challenges relating to sustainable living

(4) they have to reduce the costs and efforts of health care workers and institutions.

High tech systems

Human Technology Interaction research directly supports modern Automotive developments like guided driving, distance control, lane control, fuel efficient and safe driving styles by researching issues regarding the allocation of control, signaling of events to the driver, negotiating merging and enhancing looking-ahead.

HTI research contributes to augmented communication technology by studying effects on empathy and connectedness by exploring new dimensions in communication such as heart rate variability and other aspects of mediated presence.

HTI research on lighting studies the effects of novel lighting systems on human performance and mood, and researches the potential of adaptive lighting and the sustainable merging of artificial and daylight sources.
