Le 1er juillet en Pologne... Une rencontre sur la presse européenne à l'heure des bouleversements technologiques...

(R)EVOLUTION OF EUROPE’S PRESS

Today’s media sector in Europe faces various challenges, while innovations and disruptions in and around Europe’s media provide a wide range opportunities. Recent developments in Hungarian, Polish, Slovakian and Czech media present a relevant starting point to kick-off the debate and illustrate how national and European politics impact media freedom, and how the need for high investment in investigative journalism, diversity and truly independent media content can be embedded best in a sustainable business approach in times of technological innovation and new competition.

The conference “(R)EVOLUTION OF EUROPE’S PRESS” will therefore look at this situation from the press freedom perspective: how do the developments at political level, market level and technology level impact a free, independent, diverse and vibrant press across Europe?

This one-day event will feature two round table workshop sessions on press freedom in the 21st century on the following topics:
(1) Changing political priorities and its impact on press freedom
(2) Technological innovation: Sustaining the business side of media to finance a free and independent press sector in Europe

Each session will include expert commentators to manage the discussions per table and to present a summary at the end. In addition to the sessions, there will be a closing panel to tie the two topics together and close the event. A gala dinner is anticipated on the evening before the event, to be hosted by the mayor of Wroclaw, Rafal Dutkiewicz.

The format is highly interactive and the outcome of the conference will feed into the Future Media Lounge debate in the European Parliament in September 2016, as well as in a publication to stimulate this debate in a wider network across Europe.

The conference will be held in this year’s Cultural Capital of Europe, Wroclaw in Poland. It aims to bring together a high-level group of approximately 80-100 politicians, media experts, journalists, start-ups and technology experts in an interactive conference format. The objective of the event is to raise awareness about emerging challenges to media freedom in Europe. By bringing together a strong coalition of national, European and international press publishers’ associations as well as journalist associations, participants will be able to engage in a high-level forum to discuss a holistic view of real and potential threats to press freedom in Europe.

This conference is being organised by a coalition of media and journalist organisations: the Czech Publishers Association, the European Journalism Center, the European Federation of Journalists, the European Magazine Media Association, the European Newspaper Publishers' Association, Fondation EurActiv, the Hungarian Publishers Association, the Polish Publishers Association, the Slovak Publishers" Association, the Worldwide magazine media association, and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers.
