Global Meeting of Experts on the Ethical Aspects of Information Society

How to avoid new disparities in the development of knowledge society? How to ensure that everybody enjoys freedom of expression through the Internet and new media? How to create a fair and multicultural information society for all addressing the ethical challenges of the 21st century? Leading experts from around the world will gather together from 16 to 17 October 2013 in Riga (Latvia) to discuss current and emerging ethical challenges of the information society.

The Riga Global Meeting of Experts is the next step in an ongoing effort of UNESCO’s Information for All Programme (IFAP) to raise awareness of, identify, and reflect upon societal and ethical challenges brought about by information and communications technologies. Building on conclusions from the previous debates, the meeting aims to review the progress made by UNESCO and IFAP in the implementation of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Action Line C10 (Ethical dimensions of the information society), and to prepare recommendations for sustainable and feasible actions in Member States.

The meeting is organized in cooperation with UNESCO and IFAP by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO. The organizers expect that it will raise further awareness about the role of technology and technology-mediated processes in social transformations.
